Awesome work by “The Educational Freedom Coalition”!

Thanks to “The Educational Freedom Coalation” who took my list and added a lot more companies to it. They have personally contacted almost all of the companies they have listed.

(I have not yet reviewed this complete list. I will make updates to it as I have time to check it out. My updates are hyper-linked. –KSC)

These companies intend to remain independent. They may or may not know of ways in which their materials “align,” but they do not use that as a selling feature; it is really a moot point for them.To make this easy to read, names appear in alphabetical order.ACE: Accelerated Christian EducationAll About Learning Press (All About Spelling, All About Reading)

NOTES:

(1) Analytical Grammar does not even have a chart to show where it might correlate with CCS. The author says parents (and schools that use AG) can figure that out for themselves if they’re interested.

(2) Materials written by Christian Liberty Press are not aligned. However, the full curriculum packages that CLP offers include some materials that are aligned.

(3) Global Student Network has created a line of totally aligned materials, but it also remains steadfastly committed to keeping its original line unaligned. They plainly said, “We will not do away with the original version of our courses.  We believe that one of the reasons families homeschool is to be able to decide for themselves what is the best educational path for their children.  For this reason, we many options available to assist all homeschool families on their educational journey.”

(4) The publisher of Jacob’s Math (Bedford, Freeman & Worth Publishers) has clearly stated that those materials will not change. However, the company does publish other materials (not typically used by homeschoolers) that are CCS-aligned.

(5) The publisher of Math Mammoth is unapologetically in favor of the CCS. She has stated that she has no plans to align the Blue and Green series, but only because she doesn’t see how doing so would be possible (because they’re topical, not grade-level oriented). However, she clearly favors alignment and would align Blue and Green if she could. And everything else she has written and will be writing going forward will be consciously/explicitly aligned.

(6) Mott Media has indicated a strong support for educational freedom and does not seek materials it sells based on any connection to CCS. However, they “have selected a few products from publishers who advertise that the materials support the [CCS]. In such cases, these materials were not selected for that reason but because the content fulfilled a specific need in a curriculum track.” When in doubt, we suggest you contact Mott directly, and we’re sure they will provide honest answers.

(7) My Father’s World is not aligned, and they only recommend non-aligned versions of Singapore and Saxon, their recommended math programs.

(8) The public school version of Saxon is consciously/explicitly aligned.

(9) Singapore has aligned/will align all of its products except for the US Edition of their Primary Mathematics series.

(10) Homeschoolers typically use the 1998 edition, which has not aligned and will not be revised to align. In fact, even the 2004 has not aligned and will not be aligned.

(11) Stack the Deck is no longer being published, though some copies may still be available until inventory runs out.

HOMESCHOOL CURRICULUM THAT DIDN’T MAKE CHANGES IN ORDER TO BECOME ALIGNED

These companies may be noting on their websites where/how they align with CCS even if theydidn’t make changes in order to become aligned. In other words, they “appear to be acknowledging where they align with CCS, but not necessarily changing to align.”

They are, perhaps, pandering a bit to the CCS frenzy by showing how their products meet certain aspect of CCS – maybe because their materials are also used in public schools – but they have not purposely altered their materials to specifically fit CCS.

Companies marked with a (-) failed to respond directly to our query so we had to take our information from their websites. However, we were careful to be sure each company made a clear statement there.

NOTES:

(1) Academic Success for All Learners has not changed the content of its materials. However, it has researched how/where its program aligns with CCS and will make that information available to parents upon request.

(2) Bridgeway uses resources from about 30 curriculum companies, some of which are not aligned (ACE, Apologia, etc.) and some of which are consciously aligned (Alpha-Omega, BJU, Compass, etc.). They don’t aim to align everything to the CCS, but a number of their source companies obviously do.

(3) While materials written by Christian Liberty Press are not aligned, their full curriuclum uses some materials from companies that have aligned their content with the CCS, including Alpha-Omega and BJU.

(4) The Critical Thinking Co.

(5) Easy Grammar

(6) The author of Easy Peasy has not consciously aligned her scope and sequence to the CCS. However, she recommends many resources that are consciously/explicitly aligned with the standards.

(7) While Hake has made conscious CCS-related additions to its Writing books, the Hake Grammar books have not been changed one bit from what they’ve always been. The Hake website does contain documents showing how the program aligns with CCS, but they have not changed its content.

(8) IEW sent a detailed response that clearly indicates they are no fan of CCS and have not altered the content of their program one bit to acccommodate it. Please reqest a copy of their statement from the admin if interested.

(9) Kolbe Academy uses resources from a variety of companies, some of which are not aligned and some of which are consciously aligned. Kolbe will not use any materials that compromise its stated mission, but is willing to consider CCS-aligned resources if their content doesn’t conflict with that mission.

(10) Mott Media has indicated a strong support for educational freedom and does not seek materials it sells based on any connection to CCS.

(11) Sonlight-written materials do not align. However, it does include in its packages some materials from companies that have aligned their content with the CCS (EPS Books, etc.).

(12) Uplifting Education says it doesn’t include anything about CCS in its programs unless a parent wants to have his/her child align with the standards. However, UE uses materials written by Compass Learning, which is fully, unapologetically aligned.

(13) Veritas Press-written materials do not align. However, Veritas uses other vendors for some content areas and some of them (specifically Shurley English) are consciously aligned.

THESE COMPANIES HAVE CHOOSEN TO ALIGN

These companies have indicated that they have chosen to align their materials with the CCS. They have made explicit changes to their materials in order to accommodate the CCS.

NOTES:

(1) Global Student Network has fully aligned a new edition of all its materials, BUT it is also steadfastly committed to keeping its original versions unaligned. They believe in giving homeschool families a choice.

(2) Hake Writing has added a few lessons to each of its books to accommodate CCS expectations. Hake isn’t necessarily a CCS fan and the lessons were added at the ends of the books in the expectation that most students would never get to them in a school year, but they are there.

(3) The publisher of Math Mammoth is completely in favor of CCS/national standards. The only reason she did not align her Blue and Green series is because it didn’t seem feasible, given that they are arranged topically, not by grade level. If she could align them, she would.

(4) Math-U-See hasn’t changed its scope and sequence, but it has added pages in all of its books through Zeta that do align with CCS.

(5) The Right Start website indicates that new, 2nd Edition materials – coming out in March, 2013 – will be aligned.

(6) Saxon made a very explicit statement that, while the public school version is aligned, the homeschool version is not aligned and will not be aligned.
